Sustainable energy & transport ... the urgent need of the hour!

Image
What's the buzz all about? There is a lot of buzz around the term "sustainability" these days. Every other company now talks about how they have prioritized ESG goals along with a focus on business growth.  One of the main reasons for a new-found interest in sustainability/ decarbonization/ energy efficiency is the accelerated pace of global warming, which has made the effects of climate change considerably conspicuous, with multitude of anomalies in weather patterns across the globe.  According to NASA's Global Climate Change portal: Earth’s global average surface temperature in 2020 statistically tied with 2016 as the hottest year on record, continuing a long-term warming trend due to human activities. The exhibit - A shows the change in global surface temperature compared to long term average. Exhibit - A : Change in global surface temperature compared to the long term average (from 1951 to 1980) Exhibit - B: Global average surface temperature in 2022, compared t...
Watched "3 Idiots" today at Pune... and hats off to Rajkumar Hirani & Co for creating such an excellent cinematic experience! Having read Five Point Someone umpteen times, I expected a plot similar to the book... but then I was pleasantly surprised!Although the plot was loosely based on the novel, the movie in entirety was completely new and refreshing in its approach... Great going Aamir! Of late, Aamir's movies are taking up very pertinent issues and I hope that this movie has some effect on our education system (which is in dire need of a complete overhaul). Kareena, looked "intelligent" and her performance was commendable! After Taare Zameen Par, this is another movie which manages to evoke strong emotions! The whole experience was all the more special for me as I had watched this movie with my college buddies... Pappu, Saamba, SJ & Radhe... we all met after two years finally (after months of "planning"). Hope we have more such "get-to...

Back to Blogging!

It's been more than a year since I updated this Blog! Life has changed for me ever since I became a part of the corporate world. I hardly get time to pursue my hobbies now. Although I realize that one's professional and personal lives must mutually exclusive, it is better said (and of course lectured) than done. I'll hopefully be more regular now!!

Enough is Enough!

The recent Mumbai attacks have left me flabbergasted. It just goes to show how pathetically vulnerable we are. I recently visited Mumbai and I just could not believe the scenes that were unfolding on the tube. This time around the enormity & the severity of the incident is just too great to be ignored. It's as if someone enters your home, ravages it and you the only thing you can do is to be a mute spectator! We as citizens of this country are entitled to security from these kinds of incidents. It is high time now that politicians undertake governance rather than indulging in Politics. I wonder what happened to the party which was formed by a group of intellectuals (including IITians, MBA grads). India now needs a sensible governance now. A hopefully good step in this direction is the formation of the Professionals Party of India. We need to infuse professionalism in the parliament... For once, let the IAS officers take charge of our nations instead of playing second fiddle to ...
Blogging after a long time!! Well, I have now officially Graduated to an ELECTRICAL ENGINEER! (with a B.Tech in Electrical & Electronics Engineering). Random Jottings III

This time, Summer is becoming too hot to handle. In Chennai itself, the mercury is hovering around the 40+ mark and compounded with the high Relative Humidity, it's making lives miserable. My Final Degree Exams are about to conclude, after which I will Officially turn into an Engineer!! Another Chapter of my life is coming to an end... This was a phase filed with excitement, responsibilities and maturity. Hope the next level in life would bring the much needed solace...

Pilgrimage par excellence

Image
I have been to "the heaven on Earth" quite a few times but this time, I had climbed all the way from Tirupati to Tirumala... A total of 3550+ steps. It was a tremendously satisfying experience. I reached Tirupati at around 3am and after obtaining the Free Sudarshan ticket, embarked on the journey to the God's abode- Tirumala. The initial steps were quite difficult to negotiate as the inclination is very high.. It is quite tiresome... Anyways, innumerable shops on the way, serve chilled cool drinks/water and snacks, which make the journey a tad bit simpler. It took us 4.5 hours to reach the summit. En route, I had an exquisite view of Deers in their natural habitat... also spotted a peacock, in his full splendour. The Tirumala hills are full of awe inspiring scenic views, breathtaking landscapes... in short a treat for an avid traveller... and to the devout, the strains of "Suprabhatam" and other mantras in the air does the magic. It seems as though God really do...

Music & Mathematics

Image
I am a Music Lover and a connoisseur of Good Music. I firmly believe in the fact that Music can help our brain to relax and to stimulate thinking. Most of the genres of Music viz., Western Classical, Indian Classical (Carnatic, Hindustani etc.), Jazz and almost anything by AR Rahman can transfix me! It is beyond doubt that the ethereal beauty of a Musical Piece cannot be always scientifically analyzed, neither do Musicians seek any Mathematical relations between them... But I , as an Electrical Engineer can't stop thinking of the fantastic relationship between Musical Notes & Mathematics. Following Facts may be surprising but are nonetheless-- facts! Most of the instruments (especially stringed ones) are made using the Golden Ratio (phi)... The frequency of notes within an octave in Harmoniums or Pianos, form a Geometric Series (the common ratio being the Twelfth Root of 2) For any given octave, the standard musical notes form a commutative group with 12 elements. It is pos...
